Vincent Mazzarella, MD is a board-certified general surgeon in Northern California.
Dr. Mazzarella began his career in the Department of Cardiology at UC San Diego determining patterns of ischemia caused by various coronary artery occlusions and by testing new components for heart-lung bypass machines that have now become integral components of such systems worldwide.
He then continued with basic science research and original trials of the clot-dissolving drug tPA (tissue plasminogen activator) in cerebral stroke, in the UC San Diego labs of Drs. Zivin and Lyden. That pioneering research has formed the basis for emergency thrombolytic therapy in strokes nationwide for the past several decades.
For over 10 years, Dr. Mazzarella then provided surgical care at tertiary referral centers in California and Hawaii.
Recently Dr. Mazzarella has provided surgical services between Sacramento and Redding and recently has also provided surgical services in the Sacramento and San Jose areas. A significant number of patients have traveled to Dr. Mazzarella's clinics, and special accommodations are often able to be made for those who otherwise would have to travel a long distance.
Dr. Mazzarella also served on the inpatient (hospital) workgroup of the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology, which developed national certification standards for electronic medical records, the predecessor to today's "meaningful use" standards.
